"Asleep "
On my way home the other day, I saw this vendor selling fresh tomatoes on the street.
It was lunchtime so most establishments were closed.
This lady, maybe tired from the heat, suddenly got so sleepy and thought since it's lunch, why not have a quick nap... ^0^
Studies have shown that a 10 minute power nap is good, as it rejuvenates your mind and body.
It also helps you to be more focus on your work.
Although it's not my habit, do you often take naps in between breaks? ^-^

Continuing last week's post on 'Temples n Sky'.
This is probably the most famous Chinese Buddhist Temple here called "Seng Guan Si".
Inspired by Stupa like structure, its interiors are intricately carved with detailed designs.
In themes of red, gold and dark hand crafted woods furnishings.
It's frequently visited by locals (mostly fil-chinese) who have a profound belief in this religion.
Upon entering it main door, you'll be greeted by the laughing buddha and further inside is the goddess of Mercy.
It's said that the goddess of mercy (bodhisattva) "Kuan Yin Ma" is the most precised and beloved among the venerated saints inside.
Kuan Yin Ma is similar of Mother Mary in Catholism.
A mural depicting the life of Buddha is on the second floor and on the third floor is where you'll find the statue of the Holy Buddha, a place where worshippers have their prayers and daily chants.

hoping to alleviate poverty.

"Temple n Sky"
My sunny skywatch this friday focuses on the other side of Manila.
People have this assumption that we're all about the Spanish and American
influences but,part of our history we share it with the Chinese culture as well.
A pagoda like structure, oriental in architecture, hidden along the
Streets of Narra.
It's a well-known Buddhist temple, mostly filled with people wearing "Red" theme outfits, esp. during the festive months like Chinese new year or celebrating the divine Buddha, their gods and goddesses.
I'll tell you more about its history next time.

" Empty "
...drab or not?...
This shot was taken in Intramuros, along Arzobispo near Beaterio street.
This must be an old structure of some sort, all that's left are the exterior walls on it, even the branching out of the tree on the left looks aged already,
what used to be something grand, now looks hollow and plain.
I tried searching it on the web but couldn't find anything related to it.
Obviously, the place looks abandoned and vacant, it's best not to visit during
night time. (if you know what i mean...^0^)
added info: thanks to Hilda! ~ This is the Arzobispo side of the Jesuit San Ignacio Church ruins. The first Ateneo campus was across it, where the clamshell is now. I have a couple of posts about these same ruins but my photos were from the Sta. Lucia side. ;)
The church was burned by the Japanese at the end of the war. And since it was mostly wood, nothing remained of it except the exterior walls. The Intramuros Museum will build an ecclesiastical museum on the lot and I think they're going to incorporate the old walls in the design.

"choo-choo"
PNR- Philippine National Railways, one of the oldest conventional transporation here in Metro Manila.
It is a state-owned railway system and was only developed modernly in 1984.
It operates on two different rail lines. (the North and South rail line.)
The government is actively pursuing the rehabilitation of PNR through various investments and projects designed to revive Philippine rail transport. The situation however is still hampered because of the large numbers of slum dwellers on the rail tracks throughout the entire rail system, although some portions of the southrail line, where informal settlers were successfully relocated to housing settlements outside Metro Manila.
This is a sample of what the old train looks like.

My short field trip today was to visit the Train's headquarter which is located here in Manila.
I've never been to this side of town for awhile and was at first hesitant because it's not the usual route that i would go to.
Commuting for a train here is a little passe and uncommon unlike India which is very busy,
because there are more accesible and cheaper rides you can choose.
Before, It used to be uninviting, dilapidated, old and inaccessible.
But now, I'm surprised to see for myself how it's improved.
The new change would be that there are more "new" train engines coming thus, opening more routes all the way to the provinces like Sorsogon and La union.
I'm glad the gov't has found ways of progress and new developements.
I hope these "new hopes" won't be gone to waste in the future.

Best Photo of the Year
Barely half a year on City daily photo, already running on my (almost) 150th post and deciding for the "Best" one can be nerve racking for me. ^0^
Finally, i chose this photo labeled: "Graffiti"
What the artist is trying to portray on this piece is still an enigma, the art itself doesn't show anything that signifies Manila, but i like this photo bec. it's different, it's quirky in a way, colorful, chaotic in some way and very subjective.
But as i'm re-posting it again, i notice something i haven't before, there are actually 3 figures on this piece.
the first one, you can obviously see it on the far right side (b&W) wearing glasses.
Now, see the color red on the right and the purple color on the left?
slowly, tilt your head towards both sides and you'll see the other two figures. ^-^

Driving along Intramuros, passing by cobbled stones and intricate structures made me realize that was used to be called the Walled city- is in dire need of refurbishing, restoration and it seems the government is doing nothing about it.
What i'm showing you today is the exterior of The church of San Agustin, known to be the mother of all Philippines colonial churches. (Recently repainted and restored.)
In 1993, it's designated by UNESCo as a world's heritage site and had been named a National Historical Landmark by the Philippine government in 1976.
It was built by Juan Macias in 1586 and was completed in 1606., there's a side chapel next to the main altar which is dedicated to the Spanish Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, the founder of Manila.
His remains were re-buried here by the Augustinians, unidentified and mixed along with others, after they were ruthlessly unearthed by the British who were searching for golden treasures in 1762.
The facade throws a style of high renaissance, its symmetrical composition, paired by Tuscan columns that flank the main door of the two-tiered facade.
Researchers have been debating that the structure may have been inspired by an inverted vault-like foundation that reacts to seismic effects in the same manner as the hull of a ship resists the waves.
Therefore being the oldest chruch here in the Phils.

"Wheels"
At first glance, this foto may look average on an ordinary site.
When I took this one on Quiapo on a hot and humid day, I couldn't recall what attracted me to this picture and then it finally dawned on me. The strange contrast between these two men both on wheels, but in different situations, one is on a wheel chair, the other one is on his bike. ~ Such is Life.

"Sweet Dinner"
This is one of my favorite meal whenever i'm in a rush or when i've got nothing to eat. ^0^
I confess that when it comes to food, i tend to be picky.
As much as i devour the meat section, i'm not really a true-veggie holic.
This is what we call here as Tocino - a cured meat product native.
It's derived from spanish and usually made out of pork ( similar to ham and bacon although beef is also used).
It's often reddish in color.
It's this sweet, carmelized, sort of maple in taste.
It's often eaten with rice and fried egg or add some fresh tomatoes on it.
Slang word for it would be : "Tosilog" meaning- "tocino ( cured pork) , sinangag (rice) and itlog (egg)".
The city of Pampanga ( kapamapangans-native) is famous for this food.

"Stars seen at Christmas" take One!
Happy 2010 to everyone!
Thank you "all" for your inspiring comments!
Alas, back from our holiday trip... very tiring, still sleepy zZzZz...
but a total rest & relaxation for the past few days.
Still wishing it's yesterday or the day before and certainly will be missing my ultimate vacation. haha!
Now, i'm stuck with a whole bunch of fotos which i can't post here bec. it's not related to manila...
oh well... ^-^
"Pinoys"- filipinos have a thing for celebrities, we like to gossip, the glitz and the glamour, the who's in and
who's out of the circle. The media likes to make a big fuss as well as the society likes to debate about it.
It's supposed to be last year's... but to upload these fotos would take me forever as i don't have a wifi connection.
Every year, the MMFF ( metro manila film festival ) would have its annual Parade here in Manila,
More like the Oscar/golden globe kind of thing.
It's a sought after event as gigantic floats would passed by hoping to catch a glimpse of famous Pinoy celebrities.
Usually they would start off at the Quirino grandstand going all the way to the Aliw theatre.
But this year it's the other way around.
Getting to know who they are...
This is my first attempt, it's obviously the wrong angle bec. i was on the 3rd floor of our condo and so all i could see were these humongous trees blocking my view....
as this bus was arriving, i took some costumey figures of guys in ninja outfits!
and soon it's arrived! "Panday" the movie- starring Bong Revilla ( the one in the red shirt) who's also currently our Senator and running for a re-election.
He won Best actor for this movie.
It's said that this was the most extravagant and lavish budget, from an all star cast to the production.
The leading lady in this film is Iza Calzado, that would be her wearing the white gown.
see the three guys sitting over there.... yup, they're the supporting actors.
and so the saga continues for " Mano Po 6 " produced by Mother Lily Monteverde
starring: Sharon Cuneta - the one on the left side who's waving and smiling.
and also the other casts included on this movie.
Do you know Manny Pacquiao? the Pound for pound, ultimate Boxer of all time,
who won 7 titles at the moment and plans to defeat Mayweather Jr. on the next fight?
well, he's the main character in this Movie called "Wapakman"
He plays an ordinary man with special powers...
Bad publicity before the movie was even shown, he was rumored to have a fling with one of his leading ladies.
well, Pacquiao fans were kind of dissapointed as he's a no-show in this parade event.
the one wearing the red suit was supposed to be him.
funny thing, i overheard a kid talking with his father,
he said: dad, why would Pacquiao not take off his mask so we can take a good look at him....
