The exterior might look boring, a bit imposing and without character,
but wait, you haven't heard the whole story yet...
During the Marcos regime, then first lady Imelda Marcos- known for her extreme love for shoes wanted to build world class structures concerning cultural life,
the arts, a film theatre, etc.
one of them was this edifice called Manila Film Center.
It was the talk of the town back then, a huge, multi million project that requires more than a thousand++
laborers and non stop construction,
Eventhough the place was said to be unsafe because it was a reclamation area,
still you can't beat its location as it's just a stone's throw away from Manila bay.
All was about to go as planned till accident happened in 1981, as scaffoldings collapsed and at least 169++ workers fell and were buried alive under wet cement.
A security blanket was immediately imposed by the Marcos administration and rescuers were not permitted on the site until 9 hours later, but by then, it was too late.
The whole thing created much fiasco and controversy, the whole dream project was put into a halt, it was left abandoned and deserted,
legend says, during the still of the night,
the dead haunts the living as unrest souls still wander in and around the area.
After much debate and gov't talks, in 2001, the "Amazing Show" opened to the public.
I have no inkling about this but was surprised to find via wikipedia that the show features transgendered performances and since then, have attracted tourists from all over the world.

ReplyDeletethanks for the info.
That's so tragic! Did you see a performance there, Arabesque?
ReplyDeleteI also recall her extreme love for other people's money to get those shoes but this story is just horrible. History isn't always pleasant.
