uh oh, I think by now, you're getting tired of CNY posts.
I assure you this is the last piece of it. ^0^
While I wasn't able to attend our dinner reunion last week,
blame it on the terrible traffic and no available valet service from a 5star hotel
and literally no parking space. tsk, tsk.

Thankfully, Pepperoni did all the shooting for me. ^-^
If the last two days were about the streets,
today, let's head inside Manila Hotel's CNY version.

Hi Guys! back to Manila again.
I haven't been out and about lately, in fact, I still have lots of fotos from last year.
But last week, I made sure that I have to visit Chinatown and see what's happening.

Here are some of the random shots.

It was clearly livelier and more festive than last year,
I was surprised to see hordes of people, even tourists wandering about,

some of the locals even brought their cameras with them,
which is something you don't see everyday.
I think, pinoys are beginning to accept it as part of their special day as well and
they are more curious than ever unlike before, it's usually a snob.
In fact, there are more vendors selling this and that,
to the point of occupying the streets of the pedestrians.

The most was either these "lucky charms" or "properity fruits" that bring good luck.
Pinoys tend to be superstitious. ^0^

and in fact, it was only this year that CNY was officially declared as a special holiday. ^0^
a smile for me as I get an extra day off again! ^-^

chinese caps, gilded trinkets, the laughing buddha, even angry birds! ^0^

Although, I don't really follow these traditions like we used to,
I missed those times when we only have a simple get together dinner at my grandma's house
with cousins and relatives, eat noodles,lumpia and more, and then, exchange red packets and
celebrate it till midnight.
Nowadays, it gets a bit boisterous and flamboyant,
non-stop lion/dragon performances here and there and lots of fireworks
and of course,
the famous sticky rice cake (Tikoy) fever. ^0^

and lots of balloons this year,
can't help taking fotos of them.
I can be a kid sometimes. ^0^
I like the smurfs though, cute right?!
100 pesos each, more or less 2$. ^0^

I ran into a sculpture near Musee Cluny and find this plaque of Montaigne.
Michel de Montaigne had this to say...

"Paris a mon coeur des mon enfance,
Je ne suis francais que par cette grande cite grand surtout et incomparable
en variete
la gloire de la france et l'un des plus nobles ornements du monde."

google translate it as:
Paris was my heart of my childhood
I'm french by this great city especially great and incomparable in variety
the glory of France and one of the noblest ornaments of the world.

and this is a Photo Exhibition outside Jardin de Luxembourg,
from the RER-luxembourg exit, we literally wheeled out
our luggage all the way to our hotel and each minute the load gets heavier.
I knew it was going to take us 15mts or more, but darn!
that walk took forever.
So, on the last day, we took the shuttle bus instead. ^-^

P.O. box -
I always like taking fotos of mail box, each city is different from the other,
apparently, their mails are segregated as overseas and locals,
now that's something new to me.

This is a typical "Metro" sign station.

In touristy spots like Jardin de tuileries etc, you'd sure to find one pesky lady like this,
asking for donations and whatnot.

I'd never forget La Madeleine, not because of its structure which, by the way looks historic as ever.
but because, apart from the obelisk at Place de la Concorde, it's become our point of origin,
whenever we got lost and seem perplexed by the map, we had to find our way back to this area. ^0^
It was also around this area, in Rue st. Honore where you'd find the famous La Duree,
Oui, the scrumptious maccarons. ^0^
We bought Rose petals and Pistachios.

and where a kind french bourgeois lady approached us out of nowhere and offered to help.

5th arrondissment, Le Pantheon.
The weather was against us that day.
It was afternoon-ish and foggy, misty, cloudy all rolled into one,
and the camera couldn't catch the right tone.
..and to think that I was looking forward to see this one...

In Paris, there are these courtyards and narrow cobbled streets like this one.
Very parisian eh?!...

and of course, we went all the way to Centre de George Pompidou.
suddenly, it seems like you were transported into a different setting of Paris.

On our way to Pigalle, we passed by Gare St. Lazare station.
again, this area gives you the other side of Paris, that is less touristy, mostly middle class area.

and there's the famous Moulin Rouge, almost missed it! ^0^

and the whole trip wouldn't be memorable without meeting a friend.

Part II

The first day we arrived from Paris, Peter from "Peter's Paris", a dear friend and blogger,
was kind and nice to show us around and gave us a quick tour of the place.
the three of us walked from our hotel towards La Seine, the Notre Dame, the Grand Palais
and finally the Louvre museum.
I.M. Pei's design, no matter how controversial it used to be, looks stunning at night as it is in daytime.
You can't help but say wow! once you see the structure.

I clearly forgot how we end up here.
But it's the Arc du Carrousel, a petite version of Arc de triomphe.
I remember asking Peter if this was the Triomphe because I was looking forward to it
and because it was dark, I was quick to assume it was.

and so this is the imposing Arc du triomphe.
see the difference right?! ^-^
Tourists are everywhere that it's hard to get a good photo op without someone's head popping out.

Now, on our last day, we were already cramming because we think missed out on a lot of sights
clearly, we sort of wasted our 3rd day, a long story, something to do with Peppperoni's friend who we decided to meet
but came out to be a disaster, ugh! skipping this part...
so we decided that we had to at least visit L'Opera Garnier. ^0^

Then, we head on to La Fayette and Printemps and did some window shopping.
The structure even looks better at night, with all the fancy lights on.

this is a glimpse of Jardin de tuileries, not our plan to visit but glad we did,
the scenery, the greenery, plus the monuments are a must see here.

a visit to Musee D'Orsay, and this is just its entrance,
just look at the heap of people.

on our way to La Tour that same day, not knowing there's a museum nearby,
we chance upon Musee Quai Branly.
Apparently, my research wasn't enough. ^-^

" Paris and Me "

Paris is a city that i've been longing to visit since forever and I'm glad I finally did. ^0^
I'm also glad that I don't have to go through that torturing process with the french embassy
or else It would leave a tainted impression.

So, how do I summarize my trip? hmm...
Eventhough a bit tired from my morning flight from BCN to Paris and whilst, still missing a bit of Gaudi's architecture.
Paris throws at you this gigantic airport from terminal2 to terminal3,
I kid you not but you need to have good stamina and efficient feet because walking is the
name of the game. ^0^
Paris is a melange of old and new history all mold into one.
It's interesting and it doesn't bore you.
I've had my fair share to talk with a few Parisians in french and they were all very nice
and helpful ( in my opinion ), and not snobbish or rude as some people might have said. ^0^

First, on our list that is a must visit, bien-sur! The imposing Eiffel Tower.
We had to re-visit this more than twice, bec. the on the 1st night we were already tired, the 2nd night, it was literally foggy and
we couldn't get a glimpse of it,
so we had no choice but to go there again the next day and Voila! this is the a.m shot. ^-^
we got into the back view.

This is the 2nd night, can you almost see Eiffel lost amidst the fog? ^0^
we thought we were lost because we couldn't find La tour.

On our last night,we finally caught up with him.
It was magical and really beautiful, eventhough, it was raining and my boots were already wet and my hands were starting to shiver. ^0^

Happenstance when I found this poster stating Paris, Pas cher "not expensive"... which is clearly the opposite,
everything from water to food is plus cher. ^0^

But I did manage to find something cheap from Gibert et Joseph, around the 6th arrondissment, 50 cents books!
you don't get that kind of bargain here in Manila, much less a nice french book.
so I was like a madman scouring for any good titles
and happily bought at least 10. but if only my luggage could take more... ^0^
I love books as much as I like shopping and they're always 2nd on my list.

Notre dame at anytime of the day looks stunning as ever and this was taken from the point of view of La Seine.
Even at night, the church is just filled with tourist all piled up curious to see what's inside.
A pity as this was my favorite to visit list but due to time constraint, I wasn't able to absorb its beauty more than I would've wanted to.

" Barcelona and Me "

Part II of our trip leads us to the Arc de Triomf structure, dated is what it looks like but interesting details once you look closely,
It is imposing just like I'd imagined.

Barri Gothic area, literally beside the beautiful Barcelona Cathedral, which is a must visit.

Tempting gift shops and whatnot along the streets of the Gothic quarter.

I think this one is heading to Dali's petite museum.
Interesting find as well.

One museum we almost wanted to skip because earlier that day, we went to Columbus' tower to view
its 360, but was dissapointed in its crammed and claustrophobic space.
But this newly renovated Palau Guell begs to differ.
Thankfully we both agreed to take a look inside and was the tour really worth it.
If only we weren't pressured for time, we could stay there for hours.
So much to see inside and what's more, you can take all the pictures you want without restrictions,
accompanied with an audio explanation in every room.
The entrance fee was 10 euros.

but the piece de resistance is at the top floor are
Gaudi's signature mosaic tiled works or
Trencadis which can be seen in the chimney tops.
really mind blowing, even the flooring is a bit wavy, you seem to be floating on top of the edifice.
the view is also breathtaking. ^0^

We also went to the huge Arenas de BCN and thereby, stopping at Placa Espanya.
the structure is the biggest torre I've ever seen. ^-^

Then, we were lured by this huge dome shaped structure ahead, we don't know what it was yet, but we went further,
and finally to MNAC museum.
Not what we had planned to visit, but sometimes its good to let your feet wander to where it leads you.
Again, the view of the Tibidabo and the city was picture perfect.

On our last day, that was the 25th of Dec.
ALL the shops are literally closed because of the holiday, we were worried where to eat or what to see,
so, we walked around Universitat, Passeig de Gracia, the winding roads of Calle de...,
all the way to Eixample where Casa Batlo and the more Casas are located.
But the one thing I forgot to see was La pedrera's Casa Mila.
I thought, we already did but I got the Batlo and Mila all mixed into One. ^0^
Well, we did took a haste photo of it while in the bus, I was hoping to take a closer look into it though.
Oh well...
and no, we opted not to go inside Casa Batlo even when it's open on that day.
the entrance fee cost 18.15 euros.

Most of the buildings here in BCN are interesting, something I don't see here everyday,
In fact, a lot of the locals are always looking at us when we were taking fotos,wondering
what in the world are they doing?! ^0^

One middle aged man kept calling me "Nee-Hau" several times, he thought I was chinese. ^-
He said, go further up the street, " Hay una bonita Casa Alli. " - there's a nice house there.
I said to myself, this better be not a sick fat joke or else...
and he was right, it was indeed beautiful. ^-^

and one thing that is clearly evident in all the shops are these loud Graffiti art.
even this tree wasn't spared.

In the alleyways, you'd sure to find clothesline all in a row.

Of course the trip wouldn't be complete without a few stranger shots.
I'm surprised to say that most Catalans are not camera shy, in fact, when they see your lens zooming their way,
they will give you their candid smile. ^-^

and oh! I just like the symmetry in this foto, it took me 15shots to capture the unblurry one. i think there's also a hint of my reflection.

and oh! i wish i could taste those tasty Paella, the smell coming from the pan will make you go hungry.

although, we never tried the metro, we did take a few fotos inside.
not really inviting was all I could say, It was dark and dim, there were beggars and potential thieves.
If you've been to Singapore or elsewhere, you know what I mean.

and wherever you go, you'd sure find one Pinoy in the city. ^0^
and the menu here says it all.

lastly, the trip wouldn't be complete without meeting a fellow blogger from BCN daily foto.

It took us awhile to find the place, because even the locals have a hard time remembering the narrow streets. ^0^

" Barcelona and Me "

It took me almost two weeks before I can take a pause and post a few bits of my trip.
Believe it or not, I still have a huge hangover with Europe that I'm still adjusting with its time zone. ^0^
Thankfully though, i think i'm back to normal again.
Beware though, this is a terribly Long post, so skip if you think you needed to...

Well, First off, I would like to share Barcelona (BCN) with you.
I have good impressions with them despite the multiple warnings about carteristas ( pickpokets).
In fact, even applying for a Schengen Visa here isn't as hard as I thought it would be,
the consul who interviewed me, didn't catch her name but Thank you! ^0^
she was nice and polite, although you have to pay for a fee when
asking for a schedule for the interview,
It wasn't hard, except for the security guard downstairs where you had to wait for your turn,
he can be a bit bossy, but the second time, we were there, he's already smiling and even wink at us
and said, "oh!
good luck on your trip, you finally got your visa." ^0^

Contrary to the french embassy though.
Our first request was through email for a schedule and because we haven't received any reply,
we thought It got lost or something, we decided to gave them a call.
The person on the other line, unfriendly and sort of irritated as she was, said to patiently wait for
the email and that night they did reply and had scheduled us a month before the
said trip, just a month! and while you have to wait for 15 days for your visa.
How can you even make plans with days of waiting and not knowing if you're going to approved or not?!
We tried calling again hoping for a re-schedule but that person again said they're busy and
can't accommodate our questions.
Desperate and about to give up on my trip,
I stumbled through a local blog here called Wanderlass.com, who shares her insights about the French embassy
and later realized that most of their schedules are really like that,
the consuls, depending in which window are sometimes hot and cold,
the employees are more unhelpful than their boss.
unless, you're someone who knows someone, then maybe you can set a better schedule.
And disappointing to say that I'm not happy about are those Pinoys working inside the embassy
who thinks highly of themselves and takes a snob off these people applying for a visa.
They're the ones making the schedule, skimming your data and filtering the details, you know what I mean...

We finally applied in the Spanish embassy, I glad I did and the trip made it even worthwhile.
In fact, I miss BCN terribly that I wish I can visit it again soon. haha!

Now for the post,
to describe Barcelona in one sitting isn't enough and as much as I wanted to post every picture of
what i've seen, it will take forever.
so here's a glimpse of BCN. hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did. ^0^

I think for a first timer, the Hop on -hop off bus called Bus Turistic, a double decker bus and is
the best ride you could take.
there's a red, blue and green line that goes in different directions,
but during the winter months, the green line is not available.
It will take you to its major sights and worth the time and money.
I commend the every 10 minutes wait for a bus to arrive and helpful staffs inside the bus,
they spoke good english and they don't cheat you with time schedules.
plus the discounts and handouts they gave you are also informative.
for two days, it's less than 30euros.

You can't say you went to BCN and not see the imposing Sagrada Familia.
this one taken during lunch time, the weather was pretty great btw.

next stop, Park Guell.
The hilly climb on top is worth it once you're there,
the view's amazing and although, flocked by tourist from left to right.
the works of Gaudi is awe inspiring.

The famous Placa Catalunya, just 10 minutes from our hotel,
come sundown, the place is pack with people.

Las Ramblas and its fancy lights.

Things you'd find along this area.
Lots of shopping galore, souvenirs, souvenirs and more souvenirs.
Tourist opening their maps and finding their way,
Your easiest way to el raval, port vell, barri gothic...
Street performers, sketch artists and more! ^0^

getting lost at La Boqueria- be like the locals as you wander around stores selling bombones ( candies),
Jamon, fruits, marisco, etc...

Rambla del Mar -
the sea view, though I've seen it many times in fotos and blogs, looks beautiful once you're there, plus the
amazing weather.
If only I could stay there for hours and let my mind ease off and not worry about anything. ^-^

Hi dear bloggies,
Happy New year to everyone!
a bit belated already, i know.
as usual, busy doing this and that and darn knows what. ^0^

The trip was fantastic if not magical.
I kept pinching myself if it's real or not and though a bit jet lag, (twice I woke up late for work. ^0^ ) I already miss them both and wish I could visit it again soon.

Anyway, here's a glimpse of what I saw, pardon me for the slow post.

The first ooh -aah photo was on the roof top deck of our hotel.
overlooking a bit of Barcelona's view during sun down,

and the 1st thing we did when we landed in Paris...
Bien sur, walk all the way to "La Seine" and oh! how it glows at night. ^0^

Yes, a trip to Europe sounds fun, but all the planning and Visa meet up
can be a bit overwhelming.

a few more days before Christmas...
and while traffic jams are quite heavy these days,
the usual frowns and odd-faces of some people
have turned into smiles and thank you.
Yes, Christmas is certainly here. ^0^
Are you rushing out for last minute shopping or already did your homework early?

Maybe quite an overused phrase but Time really flies fast, doesn't it?

Well, I was in the streets of Quiapo the other week and it's been ages
since I last visited this area,
mind you, the area can be packed with people from all sorts and chaotic
at the same time.

There's a good old fashioned ham store around that area that I want to share
and it sells fresh and tasty hams of all sizes and shapes.

so, if ever you're in this neck of the wood,
it's called Excelente, your usual run of the mill store that looks a bit rundown and dated, don't be fooled by its interior though,
it still is by far, one of the good quality hams.

You can opt for the classic or buy them in shredded bits.
Depending on the size, the prices don't come cheap though,
but at least it has quality.
something that's hard to find these days.

" The Lady and the Skull "

while this isn't my alma mater,
It is an institution that is considered to be one of the well known
universities here in the Phils.
and while I wish I have an inkling as regards to what this statue symbolizes,
the skull below the figure pretty much ( I think ) means that it has something to do with human body and medicine.

This is the UP College of Medicine established since 1905.

One of the halls is dedicated to an obstetrician doctor named Dr. Fernando Calderon.

there they are tucked in a corner.
They say it's one way to de-stress and helps your mind as well.
I don't know, i don't really have the patience for it,
I felt like it's time consuming. ^-^
I tried it when i was a kid, but I always end up throwing in my queen,
I guess it's not my cup of tea.
But interesting to see that children as young as them seem to be having fun in
this game.

" Manila Metropolitan Theatre "

It was once a respectable and distinguished establishment called The Metropolitan Theatre.
Designed by Juan Arellano during 1930's.
I did some post awhile back, but from afar, see here.

Looking closely at its patterns and details.
Beautiful Art Deco leftovers in this structure, as molds and mildew starts proliferating.

almost 6 months after, the place is clearly abandoned,
the structure, dilapidated than ever and worst,
housed by vagrants and illegal settlers.
A pity that until now, it has been overlooked by the government.

It took me awhile before I could post this foto because
I was hesitant at first.

Wondering why this guy has this sheepishly grin on his face? ^0^
Well, in a typical boisterous public market,
a crowd started to gather around this barricaded area,
so curious as I can be,
I walked further to see what's it about and saw that there's an unofficial cockfight that's about to happen.
It's illegal to hold cockfights and place bets elsewhere except in particular places.
But the locals can be err, really stubborn at times. ^-^

I was hoping to sneak a few fotos to post when this guy quickly caught sight of me, and oops! I thought he'd be mad, but instead, gave me this aha!-you-caught me-smile.
So,in a jiffy, I ended up with a blurry foto of him and his dear rooster.

In a local street here in Manila there's a line of shops selling
religious relics and artifacts.
Pinoys tend to be superstitious if not believers of faith and the supreme being.
Regardless of whether or not you do,
I'm sure there's something interesting to see.
Take this shop for example, because I only have seconds before the car speeds ahead,
it was hard to get a good angle, so this is pretty far a good one.
When I was tweaking my foto, I was surprised to see that the religious figures are
still covered in plastics, for protection against dust and getting old I guess. ^0^
upon looking closer, they have a bust of Jose Rizal ( national hero) and they even sell tombstone!
how morbidly interesting is that?!

counting the days before Christmas as streets are beginning to be filled with flickering lights and decorations a shop here in Manila though, is already selling
these fancy Christmas Parol.
it doesn't look interesting during the day, but its colorful lights are certainly magical at night.

a group of dried fishes, on sale here in Chinatown market.
and while i'm not a fan of dried fishes or " Tuyo " ( locally ) as we call it here.
When you cook them, the whole house smells fishy and the neighbors are sure to know that that's what you're having for dindins. ^0^
But really, they can be very tasty and salty at the same time and an all time favorite best if paired with fresh tomatoes and garlic rice.

The street i'm sharing you now is near Rizal Avenue, along Sta. Cruz and also the church. The streak of lamps leads to Sta. Cruz bridge.
a lot of hubbub during the day and a busy street as well,
but certainly not advisable to wander alone at night. ^0^

You know you're in chinatown when you see a group of twig-like sticks tied together and displayed outside a local store.
We call it " Ham Tsao Kua "- read in fookien, there's another name but
I can't seem to find its equivalent.
Ham Tsao Kua - is a traditional chinese herbal medicine that alleviates and helps cool our body system.
It can also be a remedy for cold.
Just ask any chinese medicine store.
Because our family still rely much on traditional medicine.
I'm used to seeing them being boiled into drink or as a broth.

Sunset spotting is beginning to be one of my favorite subject and
I'm glad I caught this riveting moment in time to post for this week.
This was actually last Sunday's rendition,
It rained heavily that afternoon and I thought the sky was going to be bleak.
but hours later, as the sun was going down,
this unexplainable form of clouds created this delightful palette and almost
an orbit like circling in the middle, and I knew I just had to have this shot. ^0^

but this familiar street, has changed a bit, a few of the shops and structures have come and go, but this particularly tree won't seem to budge,

What's evident though, was the printed signage that perfectly marked how old this structure was.

Many of the locals here might have looked through this structure,
hardly noticing what this edifice looks like.
Located along Dasmariñas, named after its owner called Yutivo.
Hard to believe that this one's been here since 1920's,
hence, the art deco-ish inspired architecture.

I would´ve like to shot the whole thing,
but during the day the street gets busy and much to preserving its decor,
there has been this obtrusive signs hanging out.

This park along Pasay that overlooks the bay,
lights up beautifully at night.
But still not enough in my opinion.
I wish there were more recreational activities and interesting things to see.
These days, some of the establishments here have started to close down and
the less lighted area seemed off.
If the purpose were to attract people to hang out and dine.
it would be best if special events are featured here from time to time
Because restos are battling neck to neck
or maybe a fun amusement park where kids can frequently visit to.

Standing amidst the crowd, along roxas blvd and almost in front of a hotel,
upright while raising its right hand is a statue of this friendly looking figure.
But like any monuments, we only have a vague idea of him.

This is one of the structures inside the walls of Intramuros that is along Cabildo street.
How old this is, I don't have an inkling really.
I like the irregularity of its shape that connects with another old tenement.

Btw, I have been missing out on daily life lately, the rains keep pouring and it's hard to go out for a

Aliw is a tagalog word that has lots of meanings but i think the

The statue of Roman Ongpin stands right at the heart of Chinatown and beside Binondo Church.
Known for being a patriot and a philanthropist.
Roman Ongpin was a true Manileno at heart.
Born on February 28, 1847.
He joined a lot of propaganda, fighting for the rights of Filipinos.
He was jailed for conspiracy during the war between the Spaniards and the Americans,
but was also released after.
He became the president for Casa Asilo de Invalidos, La proteccion de la Infancia
and Gota de leche to name a few.
He died on the 10th of Decembre 1912.

and finally in 1915, a street was named after him as Ongpin. st. here in Binondo.

who is Lorenzo Ruiz ?

He's a well-loved patron saint and a martyr,
the first to be canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1987 and
here in Binondo around the circle stands his statue.

Taken from The Chapel of San Lorenzo Ruiz website :

" San Lorenzo had a Chinese father and Tagalog mother who lived in the Parian district of Manila.
In 1636, Ruiz was implicated in a murder.
He sought help from his Dominican superiors .
Initially, Ruiz thought he was being sent to Taiwan, where he believed his Chinese roots would enable him to start a new life.
Little did he know that he and the missionary expedition led by Fray Domingo Ibanez was actually headed for Nagasaki, Japan, where feudalism was fanning the flames of Christian persecution.
Lorenzo Ruiz was headed straight into the arms of death. "

" Black Chicken "

Don't be fooled by its white feathers,
because contrary to ordinary chickens,
its skin and its bones are all Black.
Hard to believe right > ?

In common markets here in downtown and I think you can only find it here.
Ask any vendor about black chicken or "Ulikba" in tagalog
or if you know a little Fookien ( chinese dialect ), you can inquire "Diong Kue" simply and i'm sure they know it.
A piece of this can be quite expensive than normal chickens and depending on its quality and size.

It's a common, comfort soup by the Chinese people, the locals here specifically buys this chicken
and mixed them with some medicinal herbs and spices.
They're good for the immune system and very nutritious as well.
But if you don't know how to cook them,
you can always order this from a chinese restaurant. ^0^

Next time, I'd be sure to post a black chicken soup,
see how it looks like, so you'd have an idea. ^0^

I always like to see clouds forming in different shapes and unexplicable
figures, as you let your imaginations run wild.

We're having yet again these temperamental weather,
in fact, news says it's going to be rainy till the weekend.
It's these days that I worry sometimes,
If the rain keeps pouring, it's inevitable that flood rises up in our area,
not to mention, those who live in worse conditions.

I like taking photographs of anything that comes with the word ____cycle in it.
and this one caught my interest in its rather peculiar installation.

"Pedicab" is a local term for this kind of transport.

It's not the case here,
but we do have a more or less similar approach to it.
Take this guy,
he has this makeshift stand beside the street, usually where the big offices are located,
then sells his mini-packed lunch in individual plastics for an affordable price.

Right in the heart of Ongpin ( downtown ), stands this old edifice,
like the casement windows, the fire escape railings and the embossed details
which was recently renovated.
If memory serves me right, there used to be an old newspaper bureau and a movie theatre.
Times have changed though, that 'P' red sign below now houses a chinese restaurant and seen above
is a federation called the Yongtan club with chinese inscriptions.

Walking along Jones bridge amidst the heat, overlooking the Post.
We saw these kids carrying a watered bottle, trying to catch insects perhaps ?
I don't know what they're up to and I don't dare ask them.

" Andres Bonifacio "

Tall, dark and alone,
stands this monument of Gat Andres Bonifacio,
one of the local heroes alongside Jose Rizal and more.
The statue is placed at the Liwasang Bonifacio Park,
right in front of the Phil. Post Office and the grand fountain.

Here's a quick info about him:

Born and raised in Manila on November 30, 1863,
Andres Bonifacio is a leader of the Philippine Revolution, aka the Katipunan,
A secret society that launches the revolution against Spain in 1896.

A writer of essays, poems and was also the 1st to translate My last Farewell,
written by J. Rizal in Tagalog/Filipino language.

This monument was dedicated by the City of Manila in 1963, the hero's birth centenary and
thus renamed this plaza as Liwasang Bonifacio.

For your banking needs, you can head on to the Postal bank which is beside the Post office,
accdg to Wiki, It is a state-owned saving system and is one of the smallest here in the Phils.

It was established in 1905, but was forced to closed down because of stiff competition with
emerging private banks, but it was re-opened in 1994.

any idea what kind of flower they might be...

One attraction outside the Post Office is this friendly waving statue- Mr. Postman.
Which clearly reminds me of Karen Carpenter's song.
I love how Blossom Flower Girl calls it Mr. Postie too. ^0^

There's also a plaque beside the statue that read:

Erected on 15th September 1975.
It represents the thousands of dedicated men and women of the
Philippine Postal Service.

A symbol of service excellence,

I think it will be a great idea if they could use it as an official mascot

Let's take a look inside the post office of Manila.
Bacically, this is how it looks like.
Its design were mostly of repeptitive patterns, from the flooring, to the windows, even the ceiling.
I didn't go further down the hall,
the security guard in front of the entrance was quick to notice my camera and told me that
without a permit, I couldn't take any photos inside, so he asked me for what purpose was it for.
I said it's for my blog that promotes clearly about Manila.
oh, Here we go again... ^0^

And like you, I'm glad to see its interior because,
I have never visited this place before even if I have passed by
a hundred times. ^-^

The famous structure in Lawton area, overlooking the Pasig river,
a stone's throw away from Chinatown and the historical Intramuros is
none other than the quintessential
Philippine Post Office or for now, called as the Phil Post.

Picture have been posted time and time again, from every angle to its detail,
but first, the overall facade.

Here are some vital infos about this edifice.
It was first established in 1767 and as its history went on,
it was heavily damaged during WWII but was rebuilt again
with the aid of the people of USA under the Philippine Rehabilitation
act of 1946.

Its architecture was inspired by Neo classical style by a Fiipino architect
named Juan Arellano.

The colonnade structure in between...

and its imposing, grand columns.

First there was the set and then the bright lights and people hovering around the area.
Either there was a commotion or a film shooting for that matter.
What I've witnessed was for a t.v. series anyway,
It's called 100days to heaven.

This is the main cast, the upcoming wonder child star Xyriel Manabat.
I have to commend this kid, she can play nice and naughty at the same time
and i think she's only 7-ish yrs.old. ^0^

and these two actresses are co-stars in this series as well.

the shoot went on for awhile, but I didn't stay long,
meanwhile, onlookers were still wandering in the area.

ps: one of the crew asked me nicely if was taking fotos with flash in it.
I smiled and said of course not,
it's broad daylight, i don't think you really needed one. ^0^

Pinoys love the fame and glamour of hollywood-ish done in Filipino style,
they're curious about their life and all the intrigues and whatnot,
so even when you're not interested,
sometimes, you sort of don't have a choice because
it's what giant t.v. networks feeds its viewers here.

This is one of the few art-nouveau inspired buildings left in this area
and in this particular side, the details are nice to look at.

as always, I don't have an inkling about its history but
thanks to a blog called the Thrifty Traveller. I found some useful info about it.

This is the Uy Chaco Building built in the 1920s and is a branch of
Philtrust Bank since 1950.

Since not all of us can afford washing machine or going to a laundry shop.

This is one of the options for drying your clothes.
But it is a bit scary, I actually saw this lady getting her clothes from the other
roof, like an acrobatic stunt, but
too bad I wasn't fast enough. I missed her by seconds.

Here in Manila, where the roads are mostly filled with pollution and dirt,
It's uncommon to see rows of forest like trees,
this one is seen along Roxas blvd near
the cultural complex.

and on another note:

starting today,
smoking will be strictly prohibited in public places-
i.e hospitals, gasoline centers, national parks, gov't buildings and
even public transportation.
Whoever breaks the law will be fined,
first offense amounting to 500 pesos = roughly 10$ or community service.

It's definitely one of the good news that the government has enacted,
but the question is- will it work? and how long will this last?

the red brick facade welcomes you upon entering the mall.

and at night, vendors would display their items for sale outside the area till midnight.

a word of caution though, because it's a bargain street, one should be extra careful of their belongings. ^-^

I have featured the streets of Divisoria already,
this roughly defined area is still considered to be
one of the largest bargain shopping district in town.
and in today's post,
let's visit the Tutuban shopping mall,
I think it was during the 90's when it was converted into a mall with a plethora
of affordable things and whatnot.
but little did we know, there's an interesting history behind this structure.

Tutuban was inspired by the sound of a choo-choo train,
toot-toot of the train's whistle and the place used to be part of a
railway station here in Tutuban area aka the PNR station.

By preserving its facade to this state, one can appreciate how dated
the facade looks like.
